What is parenteral nutrient therapy?

Parenteral administration of Vitamins and nutrients is the administration of such compounds to the body, bypassing the gastrointestinal system. Nutrients are delivered via injections intravenously, Intramuscularly or injected into fat under the skin.

The benefit of bypassing the gastrointestinal system is that the nutrients are delivered in high concentrated dose straight into the blood stream without being degraded by the acid and other enzymes in your stomach. This ensures higher concentration in the blood stream and better and more efficient delivery to end organs.

Are there any contraindications of parenteral nutrient therapy? When should I not receive them?

The safety of IV vitamin infusions is unclear, in part because it depends on which vitamins and minerals are infused, how quickly the infusion is administered, and the dose of each nutrient. Additionally, IV vitamin therapy administered by untrained staff (such as in some medical spas) should be avoided.

In general, IV infusions should be avoided in patients with:

1. Pregnant or lactating women.
2. Severe cardiopulmonary disease
3. kidney disease or on dialysis
4. Uncontrolled high blood pressure
5. Uncontrolled diabetes
6. On medications to increase blood cell production
7. On Chemotherapy
8. On Ceftriaxone

Keep in mind that parenteral nutrient delivery is not a treatment for any disease including cancer, fibromyalgia, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, diabetes or heart failure.

 

What should I expect?

You will be seen by a physician and medical history will be obtained. Your goals will be discussed and a safe and effective Drip or IM shot will be chosen.
