When to Consider Plastic Surgery Over Injectables

Going under the knife to address cosmetic concerns may seem overwhelming, but in many cases, it's the best way forward. The good news is you don't have to decide on your own. Here's our take on when you should consider plastic surgery.

It seems everyone these days has turned to fillers and Botox® to fix frustrating cosmetic concerns, and for good reason. These injectables safely deliver a younger-looking appearance with minimally invasive techniques in practically the blink of an eye.

So why is plastic surgery still a thing? Because while injectables can help with several issues, they can’t do it all. Plastic surgery can help with issues that injectables can’t solve.

At Plastic Surgery Associates of Long Island in Roslyn Heights, New York, our team of expert plastic surgeons is proud to offer you a wide range of cosmetic treatments, from traditional plastic surgery procedures to the newest methods.

It may seem hard to decide when to opt for a surgical procedure over one that's minimally invasive, so here we highlight a few reasons why surgery can sometimes be the best choice.

Where do injectables fall short?

Injectables have solidified their places as the gold standard in fast, effective anti-aging treatments, but most don't realize that their popularity comes with a few caveats. Botox and fillers are excellent options for smoothing out and plumping up when it comes to forehead furrows, fine lines and wrinkles around your mouth, and volume loss.

However, if your primary concern is excess skin hanging off your face causing jowls and sagging, injectables won't be much help.

Injectables can keep surgical intervention at bay for a time, but in the end, they can't take the place of plastic surgery. Our goal with plastic surgery is to make you look like yourself, only younger. That's also what injectables try to achieve, but if you go too far using them to solve the problems only surgery can address, you could wind up looking overdone and unnatural.

But what about the costs?

Up front, injectables may seem like the cheaper option. However, add up the cumulative cost to achieve and maintain your appearance with injectables, and they may be just as expensive, if not more.

Depending on which products you use, how much, and how long you use them, you can end up spending thousands. A facelift performed by an experienced surgeon could cost you less in the long run.

How do you decide?

Injectables certainly have their place, but they're not always the answer. Whether you've been getting injectables for years and are frustrated with the results, or you've never considered cosmetic procedures of any kind until now, we can help you decide when surgery is the best option.

We recommend injectable treatments if you're younger and just looking to smooth out some lines and replace a bit of lost volume. If you're older or you've developed sagging jowls, adding volume to your skin won't help — you need surgery to tighten your skin.

Typically, we don't recommend plastic surgery until your body has fully developed, and the absolute youngest you can be without parental consent is 18 years old. Our patients are usually in their 40s-60s, but you can get plastic surgery at virtually any point in your adult life.

What kind of plastic surgery procedures can I have?

One of our most popular plastic surgery procedures is the facelift. During the procedure, we carefully tighten your skin to address deep lines, sagging cheeks, jowls, loose skin around the chin and jaw, and deep under-eye creases.

We also offer eyelid surgery, which corrects sagging upper eyelids, puffy upper eyelids, under-eye bags, sagging lower eyelids, and fine lines beneath the eyes.

And the best part? Just because you've opted for plastic surgery doesn't mean you can never go back to injectables. They can be a great companion to surgical procedures and help you maintain your results for the long haul.
