Facelift Q&A

What is a facelift?

A facelift is surgery that corrects sagging and skin laxity in the middle and lower parts of the face. If you’re unhappy with your appearance due to age-related changes, a facelift could be a good solution.

Am I a good candidate for a facelift?

You could be a good candidate for a facelift if you experience any of the following issues.

  • Nasolabial folds (laugh lines)
  • Cheek area sagging
  • Jowls
  • Loose skin around the chin and jaw
  • Deep under eye creases

The ideal candidates for facelift have decent skin elasticity, good general health, and don’t smoke. You can have a facelift at almost any point in your adult life, but generally, people in their 40s, 50s, and 60s tend to get the most satisfactory results.

Does a facelift help with upper face sagging?

A facelift can essentially eliminate or reduce the signs of aging in the middle and lower face.

But, facelifts don’t change the appearance of your neck, nose, eyelids, or forehead.

If you’re unhappy with the appearance of those areas, the Plastic Surgery Associates of Long Island team may recommend adding a neck lift, eyelid lift, brow lift, or other procedures to get a beautiful even-looking result.

Dermal fillers and Botox® can also combine well with a facelift. For example, if you want middle and lower face skin tightening but also need some extra volume in your lips, a filler like Juvéderm® can create the look you want.

What happens during facelift surgery?

A facelift is usually an outpatient surgery. You may receive either intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. The specifics of your facelift depend on your facial structure, your treatment goals, and other factors specific to you.

The Plastic Surgery Associates of Long Island surgeons create incisions in the hairline or in other hidden areas to minimize obvious scarring after your facelift.

How long does facelift recovery take?

Facelift recovery time can vary by person, but most people feel well enough to return to work within two weeks.

Within three or four weeks, most people notice a significant positive change. While you’ll look younger and more refreshed, the Plastic Surgery Associates of Long Island surgeons create natural-looking changes. Nobody will think that you had work done unless you tell them.
