Botox Q&A

What is Botox?

Botox is an FDA-approved prescription injectable that smooths and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in the face. It blocks nerve signals to the specific muscles that create wrinkles, which then blurs and prevents wrinkles.

Botox essentially makes it harder to move the treated muscles, but you can still move your forehead, frown, and function normally. At Plastic Surgery Associates of Long Island, the board-certified surgeons perform Botox injections. This ensures that you get the treatment you need with natural-looking results.

What areas does Botox treat?

Botox treats areas of the upper face, including:

  • Between the eyebrows
  • Forehead lines
  • Crow’s feet (lines around the eyes)

Plastic Surgery Associates of Long Island also offers Dysport®, another neurotoxin with similar effects.  Dysport is FDA-approved for use in the lines between the eyebrows.

When will I notice results from Botox?

Many people see results within just a day. You’ll see the full effects of Botox treatment within 30 days.

How long does Botox last?

Botox lasts for up to four months, but each person may experience different results based on their individual body chemistry. To maintain optimal results long-term, you can schedule retreatment appointments every 3-4 months (before the product completely dissipates).

How does Botox compare to fillers?

Fillers add volume, so they’re mainly used for moderate-to-severe wrinkles in the middle and lower face. If you have very deep wrinkles in the upper part of your face, the team may recommend fillers, but they’re only uncommonly used in the upper face.

Fillers don’t prevent muscle movement like Botox does. If you have lines that come from muscle movement, Botox is the go-to injectable. Fillers might be the right option if you have lines that exist even when you’re not making an expression.

Botox and fillers are both temporary, so if you’re looking for a permanent correction you might want to consider surgery.

How does Botox compare to surgery?

Botox and surgery are very different options, so each person needs to evaluate their treatment goals and situation to determine which is right for them. In general, Botox is a good option if you have mild-to-moderate lines and wrinkles in the upper face and don’t mind having maintenance treatments three or four times a year.

If you have deep lines and wrinkles in your upper or lower face, and you’re looking for a longer-term solution than fillers, surgery may be right for you. Procedures like an eye lift or facelift can eliminate extra skin and fat while repositioning your skin for a more youthful look.

Many people who opt for procedures like eyelid surgery later have Botox as maintenance and preventive treatment.
